Lamego

An ancient city, dating back to Roman times, it was definitively reconquered, later on from the Moors.  It was in Lamego that the legendary Cortes de Lamego would have taken place, where King Afonso Henriques would have been acclaimed as King of Portugal and the "Rules of Succession to the Throne" would have been established. There are numerous religious monuments in the county, among which stand out the Cathedral, the Church of São Pedro de Balsemão and the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, which  gives its name to the annual pilgrimage and to the municipal holiday. It is also known for its gastronomy, for the production of wines, namely Port wine, of which it is part of the Demarcated Region and sparkling wines.
