Sabrosa

Sabrosa is a Portuguese municipality located in the Douro sub-region, whose territory is full of traces of occupation by different peoples and cultures, some of the oldest dating back to recent prehistoric times, such as the mamoas, Neolithic funerary structures.The so-called Castro culture (Iron Age) also left traces in the form of castros, located in places with good visibility and good natural defences, which were later reinforced with the construction of moats and various orders of walls.The Castro of Sabrosa has also undergone a process of Romanization, as can be seen by the remains found. There is also a Lusitanian-Roman cemetery in the county.Most of the settlements in the municipality of Sabrosa date back to the Middle Ages, and the granting of the respective charters dates back to the beginning of the Afonsine dynasty, although its origins date back to before 1143 (Foundation of Portugal).In the 15th century, documentation on legacies and grants appears with more intensity, showing the existence of noble families, among which, according to local tradition, was born the navigator Ferdinand Magellan, who was responsible for the plans and partial execution of the first circumnavigation of the Earth, in the service of the King of Castile.It was also in the municipality of Sabrosa (S. Martinho de Anta) that one of the greatest exponents of Portuguese literature was born: Miguel Torga.
